How I Observed 'Sylvia' or: The Less Prepared You Are for an Observation, the Better Are the Odds for Success!

JOA 2020, Vol. 10, No. 1, Page 6

Author(s): Sirko Molau

Abstract: The stellar occultation by minor planet (87) Sylvia and its moons was one of the top occultation events in 2019. The author, who is a passionate meteor observer, got alerted via a mailing list less than 24 hours before the event. Having the experience of just one previous eventand without any serious preparation he tried to observe the occultation anyway. Many things could have gone wrong, as described in the report, but against all odds the event was observed successfully in the end. This leads to the (not quite serious) conclusion, that your chances of success are better, the less prepared you are for your observation.
