Beyond Jupiter - (83982) Crantor

JOA 2026, Vol. 16, No. 4, Page 10

Author(s): Joachim Siegert

Abstract: Since 2016, the JOA regularly publishes portraits of objects beyond Jupiter’s orbit. This short article on the Centaur object (83982) Crantor gives some background information concerning its discovery, the meaning behind its name and its orbit. Due to the gravitational influence of the Sun, Uranus and Saturn the long-term stability of the orbit is questionable. Known physical properties are mentioned and favourable occultations through till 2035 are detailed.
